Moving Checklist
- Decide what to move and what not to move and have a garage sale.
- Get estimates from several different moving companies and compare.
- Plan a travel itinerary and make your transportation and lodging reservations in advance.
- Transfer your bank accounts.
- Request records from doctors and dentists.
- Do not forget eyeglass prescriptions, dental x-rays and vaccinations.
- Arrange for transfer of your children's school records.
- Draw up a floor plan of your new home showing where your furniture is to be placed to avoid moving heavy pieces twice.
- Pay existing bills and close out local charge accounts.
- Make a record of expenses incurred during house hunting trips and actual moving expenses for tax deductions.
- Discontinue deliveries such as milk, newspapers and laundry.
- Have utilities turned off and arrange for forwarding of deposits.
- Arrange for utilities at your new location.
- Pick up personal items at the shoe shop, dry cleaners, alterations, repair shop, photo store.
- Do not forget layaways and safe deposit boxes.
- Provide for safe transportation of pets and plants.
- Take your old phone book with you for future correspondence.
- Transfer insurance policies or arrange for new policies.
- Take important papers, jewelry and heirlooms with you personally.
- Purchase moving insurance to supplement your mover's liability insurance, which may not cover all your damages in the case of catastrophic loss.
- Have valuable items appraised.
- Update your will if moving to a new state.
- Ask for professional referrals from your doctor, CPA, etc.
- Send change of addresses to the post office, charge accounts, subscriptions, relative and friends, national and alumni organizations, church and mail order clubs. Do not forget to send one to your previous employer to ensure receipt of your W-2 form.
- Be sure to allow me to send an outgoing referral through our Relocation Department to ensure that you have a professional agent to assist you in the purchase of your new home, if moving away. I can also refer professional agents in your hometown if you are moving here and have a home to sell.
